Which system is commonly used to map large areas using zones with a grid?

When you need to map large areas with a grid, you want a system that provides a consistent metric grid across the map by dividing the world into zones. The Universal Transverse Mercator system does this by splitting the globe into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, and applying a transverse Mercator projection within each zone. This yields coordinates in meters (eastings and northings) on a planar grid, making it straightforward to measure distances and plot positions across large areas with minimal distortion within each zone. Geographic coordinate systems rely on latitude and longitude on a curved surface, which isn’t a uniform grid. WGS84 and NAD83 are global and regional datums, respectively, that define reference frames rather than a grid-based mapping scheme. They underlie coordinate values, but they don’t provide the zone-based grid structure that UTMs offer.
